dark reactions

The sequence of light-independent reactions that utilize the energy (in the form of ATP) and reducing power (in the form of NADPH), produced during the *light reactions of *photosynthesis, to reduce carbon dioxide. In eukaryotes, this process usually occurs in the chloroplast stroma and it can take one of two forms, depending on whether the subject is a *C3 or a *C4 plant . The details of the fixation of carbon dioxide differ in the two types of plants but the end result in both cases is the production of carbohydrates via the *Calvin cycle.
