C3 plant

Any plant that produces, as the first step in photosynthesis, *phosphoglyceric acid, which contains three carbon atoms. Most plants of temperate regions are C3 plants. They exhibit *photorespiration and are relatively inefficient photosynthetically compared to *C4 plants . They generally have lower carbon dioxide fixation rates and higher *compensation points than C4 plants.
