cypsela

A fruit similar to an *achene except that it develops from an inferior ovary and thus also includes noncarpellary tissue. It is typical of the Compositae, where the fruit is surrounded by hairs derived from the calyx (the *pappus). This type of fruit is traditionally considered a *pseudocarp.
