1. (false fruit) A fruit that incorporates tissues other than those derived from the gynoecium. It may be derived from a single flower and include the receptacle or bracts, or may be derived from a complete inflorescence (see multiple fruit ). See also pome , hip. 2. A particular type of pseudocarp consisting of a number of achenes embedded in the outer surface of a fleshy receptacle, e.g. strawberry (Fragaria) fruits.
