(klinostat) An apparatus used to investigate plant growth in the absence of directional stimuli ('tropisms). It consists of an electrically driven motor that slowly rotates a platform to which a seedling is attached in some manner. The rotation of the platform prevents any one side of the plant receiving an uninterrupted stimulus. Using a clinostat with a vertical rotating platform it can be demonstrated that a normally geotropic root will grow horizontally when not subject to the influence of gravity.
