cline

A gradual change in a character over the range of a species. The term may also be applied to a change in the relative proportions of two or more distinct forms. For example, the leaves of lords and ladies (Arum maculatum) may or may not be spotted. The frequency of the spotted form increases towards the southern part of its range in Britain. See also ecocline, ecotype.
