Clavicipitales

An order of the *Pyrenomycetes whose members, which number about 175 species in 7 genera, produce small perithecia contained in the rounded heads of *stromata. Each ascus contains eight threadlike asci. The order includes the ergot fungus, Claviceps purpurea.
