chromosome puff

(Balbiani ring) A swollen region of a polytene chromosome, corresponding to a site where messenger RNA synthesis (transcription) is actively occurring. It is probably the large size of polytene chromosomes that makes visualization of the process possible. Although polytene chromosomes are found only in dipterous insects, it is thought that the puffing phenomenon has wider genetic implications.
