chemoautotroph

An organism that synthesizes organic molecules using energy derived from the oxidation of inorganic compounds present in the environment. Examples are the bacteria Nitrosomonas, which obtains energy by oxidizing ammonia to nitrite, and Nitrobacter, which oxidizes nitrite to nitrate. Compare chemoheterotroph.
