autotroph

An organism that needs only simple inorganic compounds to grow. Thus carbon dioxide or carbonates serve as the carbon source and can be built up into complex organic molecules using light (see phototroph) or chemical (see chemotroph) energy. Simple inorganic nitrogen compounds are utilized in the synthesis of proteins. Most plants and some bacteria are autotrophic. Compare heterotroph.
