brown earth

A type of zonal acid *soil (*pedalfer) characteristic of broad-leaved deciduous forest, such as that of Western Europe. The rainfall causes some leaching of lime from the A horizon, which is grey-brown in colour. The temperature is high enough for the rapid decomposition of organic matter resulting in the formation of mild *humus (mull). The Β horizon is dark brown because of the accumulation of various iron and other compounds. Many of these deciduous-forest lands have been cleared for cultivation. The natural fertility resulting from decomposed leaf litter is thus no longer available and both liming and manuring are necessary. Compare podsol.
