auxanometer

An apparatus that is designed to measure the growth in length of plant organs. The organ is attached by a taut piece of cotton to the end of the shorter arm of a pivoted lever. Any growth results in the upward movement of the arm, which is magnified and recorded by the other longer arm of the lever as its tip moves across a calibrated scale, or as it traces the movement on a slowly rotating drum (kymograph).
