ascorbic acid

(vitamin C) A lactone of a *sugar acid that is found in high concentrations in certain fruits and green vegetables. It acts as a cofactor in the nydroxylation of proline to hydroxy-proline. However its function in this reaction can be replaced by other compounds and it is not clear why it is essential to the growth of some vertebrates. See vitamin.
