Any of the lower molecular weight carbohydrates, namely monosaccharides, smaller oligosaccharides, and derivatives of these. The term is sometimes used synonymously with monosaccharides; thus *sugar alcohols are reduction products of monosaccharides, while *sugar acids are monosaccharide oxidation products.
