anaerobic respiration

Any of various catabolic pathways by which chemical energy is obtained from organic compounds in the absence of free oxygen. The glycolytic pathway (see glycolysis ) and *alcoholic fermentation are the two main examples. Other types include *mixed lactic fermentation and various other bacterial fermentations in which the end products include propionic acid, butyric acid, and acetone.
