aleurone layer

(proteinaceous endo-sperm layer) The proteinaceous outermost layer of the *endosperm in seeds of the Gramineae (grasses) and Polygonaceae. The cells of the aleurone layer contain aleurone grains, which store protein for later use by the embryo.
