acquired characteristic

A characteristic of a living structure or biochemical system that has been brought about by environmental factors acting during the life of the organism. For example, plants receiving fertilizer applications may grow taller and more vigorously than before and pot plants moved to a shady position may become etiolated. It is a fundamental tenet of Neo-Darwin-ism that such variations are not inherited by the succeeding generation. See Lamarckism .
