An order of the * Chlorophyceae containing motile unicellular (e.g. Chlamydomonas), colonial (e.g. Gonium), and coenobial (e.g. Volvox) algae. Members of the Volvocales have one chloroplast in each cell, often containing an eye spot. Usually asexual reproduction is by zoospores while sexual reproduction varies from isogamy to oogamy. In some classifications the unicellular forms are placed in a separate order, the Chlamydomonadafes.
