Ustilaginales

An order of the *Teliomycetes containing the *smut fungi, which number about 850 species in some 48 genera. The teliospore (the brand or smut spore) is not terminal and basidiospores develop directly on the promycelium rather than on sterigmata. The basidiospores are not actively discharged.
