Schiff's reagent

A colourless solution that is produced by the reduction of basic fuchsin (a magenta dye) with sulphurous acid. It is used in histochemical tests to detect aldehyde and ketone groups in certain compounds, which oxidize the reagent and restore its magenta colour. See also Feulgen's test.
