phloem

(bast) A vascular tissue whose principal function is the translocation of sugars and other nutrients. The phloem is composed mainly of *sieve tubes , sclerenchyma cells, and parenchyma cells, including *companion cells. It occurs in association with, and usually external to, the *xylem. See also primary phloem , secondary phloem.
