Agaricales

An order of the *Hymenomycetes containing the *mushrooms and toadstools. The 3250 species and 220 genera are divided into two families: the Agaricaceae, in which the hymenium is borne on the surface of gills; and the Boletaceae, in which the hymenium lines fleshy pores. Both families contain many edible species, including the cultivated mushroom Agaricus bisporus, which is the most widely eaten fungus in the UK.
