vital stain

A stain used to dye living tissue without harming or killing the cells. Examples include trypan blue and vital red. Intravital staining involves the injection of a stain into an organism, some of the living cells taking up the dye. Supravital staining involves the removal of living tissue from a multicellular organism and its subsequent staining. See also staining.
