A continuous longitudinal tube composed of relatively advanced tracheary cells (*vessel elements ). Vessels are present in the xylem of some ferns, most angiosperms, and a single order of gymnosperms, the Gnetales, and are the main water-transporting cells of these plants. Compare tracheid.
