variety

A rank subordinate to species but above the category form in the taxonomic hierarchy. Varieties are morphological variants, which may or may not have a clear geographical distribution. Sometimes they represent only a colour or habit phase. The variety of one author may be designated a subspecies or form by another. See also cultivar.
