A mutation caused by substitution in the DNA of one purine base for the other, or one pyrimidine for the other. Hence adenine might replace guanine and vice versa, or thymine might replace cytosine and vice versa. It is thought that mutagens such as 5-bromouracil induce transitions. Compare transversion.
