tocopherol

(vitamin E) A terpenoid-like substance found in high concentrations in certain seeds, notably cereals. It is believed to prevent the oxidation of lipids and so prolong seed viability. In a few species applications of tocopherol have been shown to replace the vernalization requirement. Deficiency in certain animals appears to cause infertility. See vitamin.
