threonine

A polar amino acid with the formula CH₃CH(OH)CH(NH₂)COOH. The biosynthetic pathway of threonine follows that of methionine from aspartic acid to the formation of homogentisic acid, at which point the two pathways diverge. Breakdown occurs via *glycine and acetyl CoA. Isoleucine is synthesized from threonine.
