taxon

(pl. taxa) A named taxonomic group of any rank. Thus at the family level taxa may be represented by the Rosaceae and Labiatae, while Rosa and Lamium are examples of generic taxa. The term was coined to replace clumsy phrases such as taxonomic entity and taxonomic unit. Furthermore, the organisms contained within a rank (e.g. genus, order, or species) can also be referred to as taxa.
