sucker

An adventitious shoot that develops from the root, often coming up some distance from the parent plant. Suckering shoots can be separated from the parent once they have developed their own root system. When suckers develop in grafted plants they are of the same constitution as the stock. If this is different from the scion, as is usually the case, the suckers should be removed before they affect the vigour of the scion.
