stomium

The point at which rupture occurs in a sporangium or pollen sac to release the spores or pollen. It is typically an area of thin-walled cells that rupture on the drying out of the surrounding tissue. The stomium is found under the annulus in ferns and between the pairs of pollen sacs in seed plants.
