sporophyll

A modified leaf that bears the *sporangia. In the lower plants, e.g. Lycopodium, it may be a leaf that has retained its normal structure and function and shows no great specialization. In the seed plants the leaf has become highly modified and lost its photosynthetic function, as in the carpels and stamens of the angiosperms. See also megasporophyll , microsporophyll.
