spongy mesophyll

The part of the leaf *mesophyll that is composed of variously shaped, often conspicuously lobed, cells with large intercellular spaces. It is sometimes regarded as a type of aer-enchyma. A humid atmosphere is maintained in the intercellular spaces, thus facilitating gaseous exchange between the atmosphere and the mesophyll for photosynthesis and respiration.
