spadix

A *racemose inflorescence in which the flowers are sessile and borne on an enlarged fleshy axis. The spadix is typical of the Araceae (arum family) in which the fleshy axis secretes sticky insect-attracting compounds and is usually surrounded by a large bract or spathe. The female maize inflorescence is also a spadix.
