somatic hybridization

The production of cells, tissues, or organisms by fusion of nongametic nuclei. The phenomenon may be induced under laboratory conditions in cells that never normally fuse together and used as a plant breeding or genetic tool. It may also occur naturally, especially in fungi. See also parasexual recombination , protoplast fusion.
