sliding growth

A type of cell growth in which an area of the cell wall expands and slides over that part of the wall of the adjacent cell with which it was originally in contact. This results in the severance of plasmodesmata between adjacent cells but does not lead to cell disruption. Compare intrusive growth , symplastic growth.
