sink

A site within a plant or cell where a demand exists for particular substrates or catalysts. Thus the mitochondria are sinks for oxygen and respiratory substrates while the chloroplasts require carbon dioxide. At a higher level of organization fruits, roots, and shoot apices are sinks for photosynthates. See mass flow hypothesis.
