sieve cell

A relatively primitive vascular cell in the *phloem of the lower vascular plants and gymnosperms, whose main function is the translocation of sugars and other nutrients. Sieve cells have relatively unspecialized sieve areas compared to those of *sieve tube elements and are longer and narrower in shape.
