serine

A polar amino acid with the formula HOCH2CH(NH2)COOH. Serine is synthesized from phosphoglyceric acid. It is also formed during photorespiration and probably during the catabolism of cytokinins. Breakdown of serine occurs by oxidative deamination to pyruvic acid. It is a component of several phosphoglycerides.
