semiconservative replication

The process by which DNA makes exact copies of itself. During this process, double-stranded DNA uncoils and the separated polynucleotides act as templates for the formation of new complementary polynucleotide chains. Hence any given DNA molecule will consist of one old strand and one new one and the original molecule is semiconserved during the manufacture of an identical copy (replica).
