selection pressure

The intensity with which the environment tends to alter the frequency of a particular allele in a given population. It is not possible to give an absolute value for selection pressure. However, by comparing the survival rates of individuals with different alleles, a measure of the *fitness of one relative to another may be derived. See natural selection.
