A rank in the taxonomic hierarchy above series but subordinate to genus. Genera containing a large number of species are often subdivided into sections. The section name is printed in italic with a capital first letter and either has the same form as the generic name or, if a plural adjective, agrees in gender with the generic name. For example, the genus Chenopodium, which contains about 110 species, is subdivided into the four sections Agathophytum, Chenopodium, Pseudoblitum, and Morocarpus. The section name is preceded by the abbreviation sect. to show its rank, thus Chenopodium sect. Pseudoblitum.
