samara

A type of *achene with a pericarp extended into a membranous wing, which aids wind dispersal of the seed. The winged fruits or keys of the ash (Fraxinus excelsior) are an example. The double samara, typical of sycamores and maples (Acer), is a kind of schizocarp.
