recombination

The formation of new combinations of genes during meiosis by *crossing over and by reassortment of whole chromosomes into new sets. As a result of recombination, the gametes that an organism produces differ from the gametes from which it arose. Consequently the offspring will vary genetically and hence phenotypically from the parents. Recombination is a major source of variation.
