recapitulation theory

A theory formulated by Ernst Haeckel that proposed that ontogeny is a short recapitulation of phylogeny, i.e. an organism in its development goes through a series of stages that resemble the adult forms of its ancestors in evolutionary sequence. The theory has since been discarded.
