reaction wood

Structurally abnormal wood formed in response to various stresses. In gymnosperms it is termed compression wood and tends to form on the lower side of branches. Compression wood is dense in structure due to the heavy lignification of tracheid walls. Tension wood forms in angiosperms on the upper side of the branches and the fibres tend to be gelatinous rather than lignified.
