raphide

A needle-shaped crystal, often of calcium oxalate, found in clusters in plant cells. The presence and form of raphide clusters are sometimes useful as diagnostic characters.  For example,  the subfamily Rubioideae of the Rubiaceae is distinguished from the other two subfamilies, Cinchonoideae and Guettardoideae, by the presence of raphides in the leaves.
