The level or position occupied by a category in the taxonomic hierarchy, e.g. class, family, genus, etc. (see hierarchical classification ). Taxa belonging to ranks between and including the levels subkingdom and subtribe are usually indicated by characteristic suffixes. Hence, taxa of the rank subkingdom end in -bionta, division in -phyta, subdivision in -phytina, class in -opsida, subclass in -idae, order in -ales, suborder in -ineae, family in -aceae, subfamily in -oideae, tribe in -eae, and subtribe in -inae. |
