prothallial cell

The smaller sterile cell formed along with the antheridial cell by the first division of the microspore in certain pteridophytes, e.g. Selaginella, and in gymnosperms. The prothallial cell does not usually undergo any further division and represents the only vegetative tissue of the gametophyte generation.
