progymnosperm

Any of certain plants of the Devonian period that show various characteristics apparently intermediate between nonseed-bearing and seed-bearing vascular plants. They have heterosporous reproduction, and certain anatomical features such as woody fibres in the cortex and secondary phloem, that are also found in the early gymnosperms.
